1897년 10월 12일 고종은 환구단에서 하늘에 제사를 지내고 '대한제국'의 정식 성립과 황제로서의 즉위를 선포했다. 이로써 '조선'은 505년의 역사를 마감했다. 본 초대장은 1897년 11월 11일, 독립협회 회원들이 독립관에서 개최한 대한제국수립 경축연 초대장이다.
