조선 후기 실학자 정약용이 형사사건의 조사 심리 처형과정을 다루는 관리들을 계몽하기 위해 편찬한 형법서이다. 당시 형사사건의 처리과정이 매우 형식적이고 무성의하게 이루어지는 것은 관료들이 법에 정통하지 않기 때문이라고 판단한 정약용은 이를 바로잡고 계몽하고자 했다.

A book of penal code that Practical Learning scholar Jeong Yakyong (1762–1836) wrote to enlighten the officials who deal with the investigation, interrogation, and execution in a criminal case in the late Joseon. The author determined that the reason criminal cases were treated in such formal and careless manner was because the bureaucrats were not well-versed in law and tried to rectify this by enlightening them.
