This is a commentary on one of the Daoist scriptures, Cantong qi (Kinship of the Three), which elucidates the methods for training the body and mind or concocting elixirs of immortality to attain the realm of the supernatural entity. Earlier, Zhu Xi had written Zhouyi cantong qi kaoyi (Investigation of Discrepancies in the “Kinship of the Three” in Accordance with the Book of Changes), explaining that the essence of the Cantong qi is linked to the Confucian scripture, the Book of Changes. In Zhouyi cantong qi fahui, Yu Yan succeeded Zhu Xi and more actively added interpretations from the perspective of neo-Confucianism.
