영조의 계비 정순왕후는 정조가 승하한 이후 남인을 배척하려는 정치적 의도로 천주교 금교령을 내렸다. “눈뜬이라는 놈이 일할 때 제 턱에 십자를 긋는다고 한다. 그런 것이 사학(천주교)에서 한다 하니 그러한가 싶다.”

Queen Jeongsun, the second queen of King Yeongjo, issued a ban on Catholicism with the political motive of removing the Southerners faction from influence after King Jeongjo’s passing. She expressed concerns, stating, “I hear that a man named Nuntteun draws a cross under his chin when he is at work. He may be doing so because such a thing is practiced in heterodoxy (Catholicism).”
