동학 창시자 최제우가 지은 동학의 기본 경전이다. 제2대 교주인 최시형이 1880년 5월 9일 강원도 인제에 경전인간소經典印刊所를 설치하고 6월 14일에 완간했다.

「포덕문布德文」은 최제우가 동학의 깨달음을 알리는 선언문적 성격을 띤다. 또한 천도天道인 하늘의 조화로 밝은 덕을 천하에 베풀어 국가와 백성을 보호한다는 ‘보국안민輔國安民’과 널리 백성을 구제한다는 ‘광제창생廣濟蒼生’의 이념을 담았다.

This is the fundamental scripture of Donghak, written by its founder, Choe Je-u. The second patriarch, Choe Si-hyeong, established a scripture printing facility in Inje, Gangwon-do, on the 9h day of the 5th lunar month in 1880, completing its publication on the 14th day of the 6th lunar month.

Titled “On Spreading the Virtue,” this scripture serves as a manifesto in which Choe Je-u declares his enlightenment in Eastern Learning. It also contains the ideology of disseminating bright virtue worldwide through the harmony of heaven, which represents the Way of Heaven. The goal is to protect the state and provide comfort to the people (boguk anmin) while delivering extensive well-being to all people globally (gwangje changsaeng).
